As spring seemingly turned quickly into summer on a hot and muggy Tuesday evening, the St. Columban U-9 boys team travelled to Goderich to take on the previously undefeated Goderich # 2 team. The boys knew they were in for a stiffer challenge after three early victories to open the season. From the opening play the Shamrocks applied steady pressure to the Goderich keeper, only to be valiantly turned away until approximately the 15 minute mark when Lucas Mahon delivered a laser from the top of the 18 yard box to open the scoring. The dam was burst and before the half was over three more goals were put past the beleaguered Goderich goalie to make the score 4-0. After the half, the U-9 boys continued where they left off, scoring four more times for a final score of 8-0. Finlay McKercher scored the hat trick on a one touch shot past the outstretched goalie from a beautiful cross by Lukas Mahon, who had received an amazing stretch pass from Emerson Growan. Goals for the evening were scored by Finlay McKercher (3), Lukas Mahon (2), Ethan Jarmuth (2) and Jack Nolan (1). Thymen Vanderploeg and Jack Van Loon guarded the net, each making a save to preserve the clean sheet. Next week, Goderich #1 travels down Highway 8 for a 7 pm game at the St. Columban pitch.
